QUITO, Ecuador: Ecuador has obtained $550 million in financing to begin its campaign to administer Covid vaccinations to its population, according to economy minister Simon Cueva.

President Guillermo Lasso, who was sworn in on May 24, has said the country will vaccinate nine million people in the first 100 days of his administration.

Ecuador has a population of 17.5 million.

"We already have $550 million assured," Cueva told the media. "We want to revitalize the economy, and the first measure to do this is the ongoing mass vaccination plan."

Cueva said the financing for vaccinations is to be provided by multilateral organizations, without offering additional details.

The government is currently negotiating to purchase vaccines from China and Russia. It is expected that the negotiations will conclude in the coming weeks.

Ecuador was suffering through an economic downturn before the pandemic struck. The country signed a $6.5 billion financing agreement with the International Monetary Fund last year.
